2021 Date Coming Soon!

This annual theater production is held on Mother’s Day evening in collaboration with New Stage Theatre. In fact, the actors in the productions by New Stage are primarily children in the Youth Acting Troupe.

Not only do people in the metro-Jackson community get to enjoy Shakespeare in the park, children in this community are given an opportunity to perform Shakespeare to audiences. Each year the production is themed in a playful way to take advantage of performing outdoors. Audience members bring their own chairs, picnics and blankets to really enjoy the evening.

Saturday was a beautiful day in the park! Thank you to New Stage Theatre’s Youth Acting Troupe for their wonderful performance of “The Tempest”.  The first performance conjured its own tempest but the show went on, as it must for a wonderful 6:00pm performance as well.

“I feel that the value of our Shakespeare in the Park collaboration with the Greater Belhaven Foundation can be assessed through watching the event unfold: watching families with young children laughing at the same words that have been captivating audiences for hundreds of years, witnessing the student performers’ grasp of the text and meter, and seeing both audience and actor enjoy the characters portrayed. It is to me the perfect balance of education and entertainment. I appreciate and adore that we here in Jackson, MS in 2017 join in with audiences and actors from years and worlds ago to enjoy Shakespeare’s works under our summer sunshine.”

– Kerri Sanders, Education Director New Stage Theater

“My favorite way to spend Mother’s Day is at Shakespeare in the Park, where we throw out a big blanket and serve a picnic and watch talented, young people act out scenes in our own Belhaven Park. My young son prefers movie night, where the big screen at the back glows while he quietly roams with fresh popped popcorn to various blankets belonging to his friends. Though I rarely make plans to sit with friends at these events, I often run into neighbors and friends I’m happy to see and throw my blanket down next to them. These events are an inexpensive way to entertain myself and family and also create spontaneous ways to connect to my community.”

- Jennifer Welch

“What a perfectly wonderful way to spend Mother’s Day afternoon! It’s a completely lovely location, relaxing atmosphere, and always an awesome performance by the Youth Acting Troupe! We look forward to Shakespeare in the Park every year! It’s WONDERFUL!”

- Maria Langford

“Hands down some of the most enjoyable shows I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of. The atmosphere in the park is always awesome.”
