  Historic Preservation Commission Meetings

  Historic preservation plays a vital role in maintaining Jackson’s unique character. It ensures that new construction and rehabilitation projects are compatible with existing neighborhood styles and quality standards. The Historic Preservation Ordinance was first adopted in 1988 and has been amended over time to guide:

  Rehabilitation of historic structures

  New development within historic districts

  Alterations to cultural, architectural, and archaeological properties

  Protection of local and state landmarks, as well as sites listed on the National Register of Historic Properties

  Local historic districts were created with the agreement of property owners, recognizing the long-term benefits to their communities.

  Slow down and step into the shoes — or claws — of the Giant Ground Sloth! Discover how these towering Ice Age giants lived in the prehistoric wild. Through slow-motion challenges, claw-tastic crafts, and mega-mammal measurement labs, young explorers and their grown-ups will compare these ancient animals to their modern-day relatives.

  Looking for something fun to do with your kids this summer? Then join MDWFP’s Mississippi Museum of Natural Science for Fun Fridays. Each Fun Friday will have a new theme where we will explore activities that feature astonishing humans, amazing animals, or crazy STEAM challenges through hands-on stations spread through the museum. Fun Fridays are suitable for families or groups with children ages 4 and up and are included with museum admission or membership.

  (Un)Lighting the Way: The Effects of Light Pollution on Migratory Birds

  With growing urbanization comes an increase in light pollution, caused by outdoor light at night. Light pollution is a global issue that affects the migratory patterns of many bird species. This lecture highlights current research on how birds navigate increasingly brighter nightscapes and what we can do to help them on their journeys.

  Bio: Murry Burgess grew up in the suburbs of MN, FL, TN, and MS with an interest in the wildlife around her. She followed this interest into a B.S. degree in Wildlife, Fisheries, and Aquaculture at Mississippi State University. She went on to graduate school at North Carolina State University to pursue a Ph.D. in Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology. After completing her dissertation, she became a tenure-track Assistant Professor at Mississippi State University.

  ​Her work extends past ornithology and ecology research. She is also an advocate for field safety in the natural sciences as an aspect of accessibility and inclusion. In 2022, she co-founded a nonprofit, Field Inclusive, which amplifies and supports marginalized and historically excluded field biologists. She is also the author of Sparrow Loves Birds and Sparrow Loves Reptiles.

  Ecology and Origins of the Gecko Adhesive System

  Gecko adhesive toe pads are an exciting example of biological nanotechnology.

  Using a combination of live and museum specimens, lab and field data, and high-resolution imaging techniques, we will investigate patterns of trait development, biomechanics, and ecological morphology.

  Bio: Travis J. Hagey

  Dr. Hagey is an Associate Professor of Biology at Mississippi University for Women (since 2018). Then, starting Monday, September 28 at Noon CST we will spend several weeks reading and discussing The Golden Apples by Eudora Welty. We will read and discuss one of Welty’s short stories per week, and conclude our discussion on Monday, November 23.   "Isn't there a Book? Someone Ought to Write a Book! The Trials and Tribulations of Writing a Book About Mississippi Snakes."

  The process of producing the book, "MISSISSIPPI SNAKES: Their Identification, Natural History, and Influence on the Culture of the Magnolia State"

  Bio. Terry Vandeventer

  In 1976, Terry left his position at Southern Illinois University to join the Jackson Zoological Park in Jackson, Mississippi. As curator of the reptile collection, he modernized care protocols, introduced naturalistic enclosure designs, and launched several successful husbandry and breeding programs for rare species.

  After five years at the zoo, Terry founded The Living Reptile Museum Educational Productions, which has since become the longest continuously running live lecture series of its kind in the United States. He has also served as a herpetology field associate with the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science for more than forty years.

  Widely known throughout Mississippi as both a public speaker and the author of numerous popular and scientific articles on snakes, Terry is one of the state’s most recognized wildlife personalities. In 2006, the Mississippi Wildlife Federation honored him as Conservation Educator of the Year for his decades of work educating the public about native snakes.

  Terry and his wife, Ginger, live on their snake-friendly property just outside (appropriately enough!) the small town of Terry, Mississippi.

  The Jackson Trail Club, Greater Belhaven Foundation, and the Belhaven Mountain Bike Trails are excited to announce the 4th annual Belhaven Hills Classic! This event consists of a 16k Road & Trail Race, an 8k run, a 1 mile “Bier Run”, and a 1 mile “Kids Fun Run”. The race includes the Belhaven Neighborhood, Museum Trail, Lefleur’s Bluff Trails, and Belhaven Mountain Bike Trails! The race will begin at Fertile Ground and will be full of fun activities, music, and friendly competition. This event will be held on October 10, 2026, the same day as Oktoberfest at Fertile Ground, and is meant to kick-off the day of festivities. It is our hope that this race will bring out the best of Belhaven and highlight her parks and trails to include the beautiful Museum Trail, as well as the Belhaven Town Center & Fertile Ground Brewery. The funds raised from this event will benefit Greater Belhaven Foundation’s Parks & Trails, which includes the Museum Trail, Belhaven Trials, Belhaven Heights Park, Belhaven Park, and Laurel Park. This event was designed to promote health and community in our great city and neighborhood. Greater Belhaven Foundation is a 501c3 non profit and W9s can be provided for charity tax purposes. The race logistics will be coordinated by MS Race Timing.

  INCLEMENT WEATHER PLAN

  If there is inclement weather the day of the race, the race will still plan to be run. In the case of events which could potentially put runners at risk (such as lightning, hail, etc), the race will be postponed by 30 minutes at a time until a proper reassessment is made. The race will not be canceled unless dire circumstances are met which include tornados or other large scale meteorological events. Tents will be available to assist with sheltering runners and non-runners and the Belhaven Town Center and Fertile Ground Patios may also be utilized. In the event of severe inclement weather, the building located at 800 Manship St. may be used for shelter in place. Refunds will not be given.

  Join us on October 23 from 5:30pm-8:30pm for Park After Dark! On this spooky night, MCM partners with MDWFP’s Museum of Natural Science to host this fun and family-friendly event. Enjoy BOTH award-winning museums for only $12! Create creepy-crawly arts and crafts, hunt for tricks and treats, and explore LeFleur’s Bluff Playground after hours. Visitors can travel safely between both museums using Spotter’s Adventure Trail and wrap up the evening with a costume parade and special entertainment at The Den.
