Community Improvement District Petition Signing KICKOFF Party!!

Stop by The Rickhouse, 717 Poplar Blvd., between 5:30 and 7:00pm Tuesday, October 8 to be the one of the FIRST residents to sign our Community Improvement District Petition!

What is a Community Improvement District? Before 2001, Mississippi law allowed special local improvement assessment districts to be formed to supplement city services and enhance property values and quality of life. That legislation “sunset” (it expired) in 2001. For more than a decade, the Greater Belhaven Foundation has worked with legislators and community leaders to get it re-enacted, and in 2019, House Bill 1612 was passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor. The passage of this Special Local Improvement Assessment District Act once again allows communities to form special assessment districts in order to enhance their neighborhoods and property values. The proposed Greater Belhaven Community Improvement District is the first step toward creating a detailed plan to improve Greater Belhaven by taking advantage of the reenacted legislation.

In order to form our Greater Belhaven we must submit a petition showing that the owners of 60% of the taxable property in Greater Belhaven are in favor of creating the CID. Once this is done, the City will schedule a special election. If 60% of qualified voters within the district are in favor, then the CID for Greater Belhaven can be created.
Bring any questions you may have and bring your ideas for what we can do!

Community Improvement District – Here in Greater Belhaven

This past Spring Governor Phil Bryant signed into law legislation that allows for neighborhood associations with 501(c)(3) non-profit status to apply to become a Community Improvement District (CID). The passage of this legislation allows communities to form special assessment districts in order to enhance their neighborhoods and property values. The proposed Greater Belhaven Community Improvement District is the first step toward creating a detailed plan to improve Greater Belhaven.

The Greater Belhaven Foundation is in the beginning stages of becoming a Community Improvement District.

What does that mean?

The Foundation has formed a CID Committee comprised of: Margaret Cupples (Chair), Rod Clement, Susan Garrard, Michael Stevens, Steve Funderburg, Claire Barksdale, Charles Lindsay, Barbara Austin, Rob Farr, Jennifer Welch, Ruffin Lowry, Laura Neill and Reed Hogan III. The Foundation has hired Belhaven resident, Amanda McGuffey, as our CID Administrator to help navigate us through this process. The Foundation has submitted our proposed CID Petition to the City of Jackson for approval.

What is next?

As the Community Improvement District legislation is new to everyone we are taking things one step at a time. Once the City approves our proposed Petition, we will start collecting signatures from our Greater Belhaven residents!! Be sure to follow us on social media and check for website updates as we have some SUPER FUN plans to KICK OFF this process!!

New Stage Theatre will open its 54th season with the comedy Into the Breeches!

1942. Jackson, Mississippi. The theatre’s director and leading men are off at war overseas. Determined to press on, the ladies at the home front set out to produce an all-female version of Shakespeare’s Henry V, assembling an enthusiastic yet amateur team. Will their production be a victory? Or will it be a target of disinterest and rotten tomatoes? Together they are determined that the show must go on! A hilarious and heartwarming comedy about the singular way art and community reveal our boldest selves even in the darkest times.

The cast includes New Stage veterans Ray McFarland, Jo Ann Robinson, Jessica Wilkinson, Emily Wright, Annie Cleveland, and Evan McCarley. Along with newcomers Sarah Beth Solop and Jasmine A. Neal!
