Belhaven, known for its historic architecture, college campues, neightborhood shopping and hospitable neighbors, is making an addition to its already stunning appeal.
Our very own Laurel Park, awarded Best Playground in Jackson Free Press' Best of Jackson 2008 and again in 2009, got its start from restoration efforts and investments from our neighbors. Now a second park, Belhaven Park, located at Poplar and Kenwood, is being defined as an urban green space for our businesses and residents. A committee of neighbors, chaired by figted landscape architect Overton Moore, a Belhaven resident, has completed Phase I of the construction.
After resoration is complete, the site will be a grassy oasis for picnics with paths for strollers and walkers. This beautiful park is improving property values along Poplar Boulevard and transforming this area into a safe and warm environment, one worthy to bear Belhaven's name. We are fortunate to have attracted investors including Entergy, the Hinds County Sheriff's Department, the City of Jackson and generous individuals.
Our vision for park restoration requires raising leadership gifts for sidewalks, lighting, benches, landscaping, a performance area and other features, revealing the Park as what it should be: an intimate environment for us to gather together as neighbors and share our gifts.
