The Greater Belhaven Foundation Receives Mississippi Arts Commission Grant

The Greater Belhaven Foundation has been awarded a $3,100 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). This grant is a portion of the nearly $1.4 million in grants the Commission will award in 2019-2020 and will be used to help fund the Being Belhaven Art Series.

The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts. “The Mississippi Arts Commission is proud to support arts organizations as well as arts activities and festivals around the state through grant-making,” said Malcolm White, executive director of MAC.

“These funds help broaden the reach of arts by educating our communities about Mississippi’s enduring creative legacy and offering arts experiences and performances to people in nearly every area of the state.”

The Being Belhaven Art Series serves to accomplish the “quality of life” goal of the Foundation’s mission statement. Primarily it is our goal to bring not only Belhaven and Belhaven Heights residents but the communities throughout Jackson together to celebrate community through the arts. Our programs are free and open to all of Jackson and the surrounding metro area, this allows for art exposure to members of the community who would otherwise not have the opportunity to experience the performances that we provide.

The Mississippi Arts Commission, a state agency, serves the residents of the state by providing grants that support programs to enhance communities; assist artists and arts organizations; promote the arts in education and celebrate Mississippi’s cultural heritage. Established in 1968, the Mississippi Arts Commission is funded by the Mississippi Legislature, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Mississippi Endowment for the Arts at the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson and other private sources. The agency serves as an active supporter and promoter of arts in community life and in arts education.

Bright Lights Belhaven Nights Announces Music Line-Up

The Greater Belhaven Foundation (GBF) is pleased to announce the music line-up for the 15th Annual Bright Lights Belhaven Nights (BLBN) event scheduled for August 10, 2019. This family fun event, presented by Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, C Spire, The Manship and Southern Beverage Company, features Gin Blossoms as the festival headliner.
The chart-topping band Gin Blossoms produced the breakout record New Miserable Experience, which kept the band on the chart for almost 3 years. Singles included “Hey Jealousy,” “Allison Road,” Until I Fall Away,” “Mrs. Rita,” and “Found Out About You.” The band’s fusion of Pop, Melodic Rock, Folk and Country elements took the airwaves by siege, making the band an MTV playlist hostage for almost a decade and the group a natural 90’s mainstay. From their breakout album through today, the band has sold over 10 million records and are one of the most in demand 90’s live artists who began at the end of the grunge era. In 2017 the band went back in the studio recording a new album. Fans will get a taste of the new album as it works its way into their live set.

Set in the historic Belhaven neighborhood, the street festival is an end-of-the-summer tradition that celebrates all things that make Greater Belhaven a great place to work, live and play, including art, music, children’s activities and food. Bright Lights Belhaven Nights has repeatedly been named a Top 20 Event in the Southeast for the month of August by the Southeast Tourism Society. The historic Belhaven neighborhood also was designated as one of American Planning Association’s “Great Neighborhoods in America 2014.”

Inspired by a real event and featuring the Grammy-nominated bluegrass score by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, Bright Star tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ’40s. The arrival of a young soldier just home from World War II, sets Alice Murphy on a journey to understand her past; what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives. Winner of the 2016 Drama Desk Award, Bright Star is as refreshingly genuine as it is daring and hopeful. Recommended for ages 13+
