Don’t Forget Art for the Park is Tonight

What happens at ART FOR THE PARK?

Your ticket allows you to enjoy a festive evening at the beautiful Fairview Inn complete with live music, hors d’oeuvres and treats catered by local restaurants, a selection of wine and beer, and a lively silent auction.

The auction features original artwork, restaurant gift certificates and lots of other unique items up for bid! Featured artwork this year is donated by long-time Belhaven resident, Casey Creasey.

What is the purpose of ART FOR THE PARK?

Art for the Park is a biennial art auction put on by the Friends of Laurel Street Park Committee and the Belhaven Garden Club which raises money for the maintenance and improvement of one of Jackson’s most beloved parks, Laurel Street Park, in the historic Belhaven neighborhood.

This park is consistently used by residents in and around the Jackson area for outdoor play, birthday parties, soccer lessons, neighborhood meetings, and outdoor games, and is used by dog lovers, families and students alike.

The Friends of Laurel Street Park is a Committee of the Greater Belhaven Foundation which works to improve and maintain Laurel Street Park with the cooperation and assistance of the City of Jackson parks department. Find out more about the Committee and the GBF here.

Where will the funds raised from ART FOR THE PARK be used?

The money raised at Art for the Park in 2017 was used to host several large work days at the park where equipment was repainted, swings were replaced, benches were replaced and several new benches were added.  The funds also recently were used to purchase security cameras for the park as well as an emergency call button! The Friends of Laurel Street Park have been hard at work on a master plan which includes a walking trail and new play areas for children.  None of this would be possible without the funds raised Biennially at this event.

Tickets are $40 each in advance and $45 doors each at the door.  Tickets can be purchased at

Fairview Inn Owner Receives National Recognition

Jackson, MS – Peter Sharp, Owner of the Fairview Inn, has just been awarded the 2019 Voice of Innkeeping Award by the Association of Independent Hospitality Professionals (AIHP).

AHIP represents over 14,000 Inns and Bed and Breakfasts throughout the United States and Canada. The award is given to an individual in recognition of long lasting contributions to the Innkeeping Industry. They must demonstrate excellence in Innkeeping and in Industry leadership on a national and regional level.

Steve Hiatt, when presenting the award quoted former Association President Jay Karen: “To an association executive, there is nothing more encouraging and supportive than a member who is the first to show up, the first to register, the first to volunteer, the first to praise, the first to offer ideas and the first to donate. In my decade of the Innkeeping industry, Peter was always that person. He sought neither attention or credit, and he always gave generously in every way possible. Associations only work because of people like him. Any association member is lucky to have him as a peer, but any of us who can call him a friend are among the most fortunate of all.”

Sharp was on the Board of the Bed and Breakfast Association of Mississippi for six years and President from 2008 to 2011. He is also served on the Board of the Mississippi Tourism Association, the Professional Association of Innkeeper’s International (PAII), Select Registry ( A collection of 400 national Inns) and Beth Israel Congregation here in Jackson. He is a founding member of AIHP.

Sharp has operated the Four Diamond, Fairview Inn, along with his wife Tamar since 2006.

Said Sharp: “I am honored and humbled to receive this special recognition and share it with our outstanding Fairview Inn Management team and Staff; and especially with my wife, Tamar, who is my rock, and allowed me so many times to be away from the Inn to serve our Innkeeping community.”

“Serving our Innkeeping community has been so rewarding. The relationships you develop, the learning you garner, and the fun you have interacting with other Innkeepers has been invaluable to our business success, and giving back and helping newer Innkeepers gives one a real sense of satisfaction.”

The Fairview Inn is an eighteen room, boutique luxury Inn in the Belhaven neighborhood of Jackson, MS. Along with lodging, the Inn has 1908 Provisions Restaurant for dining, the Library Lounge for cocktails and appetizers, Nomispa for relaxation, and provides event service for rehearsal dinners, weddings and receptions, along with Corporate and Social gatherings.

Crime and Safety

As many of you have seen on the news lately Greater Belhaven is experiencing an abnormal amount of criminal activity. The Jackson Police Department and the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department have increased patrols in our area in order to apprehend the individuals responsible. The best line of defense is talking to your neighbors and keeping an eye out for each other. If you see something suspicious take a picture first and then call Securitas and 911. Make sure to write down license plate numbers and descriptions.

Please utilize our Greater Belhaven Security Association Services and call Securitas (601) 720-6452 if you see anything that appears out of place. If you are not a member please consider joining, information can be found at

If we all work together we can catch the individuals responsible and send the message that we will make sure criminals are caught.

Join us to learn more about the ONELINE transit project!

Oneline Informational Meeting Monday, February 25, 4-6 pm Billy Kim International Center at Belhaven University

The ONELINE project will directly impact a 20 square mile area of the city stretching from Jackson State University to Downtown to Fondren. This core area contains the highest concentration of employment and institutions in the state. Some of the major institutions include Jackson State University, Millsaps College, Belhaven University, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Baptist Medical Center, along with the City, County, and State Government Offices. The ONELINE project has the potential to create new waves of investment in reshaping the development of the corridor and take advantage of demand for walkable-transit oriented urban spaces. The introduction of a bus rapid transit system (BRT) along the corridor will catalyze development and increase employment opportunities for the residents of Jackson.

Over the past year the Department of Planning and Development has been working on the ONELINE project with a steering committee made up of major institutions along the corridor which include University of Mississippi Medical Center, Millsaps College, Jackson ADA Council, Jackson State University, Fondren Renaissance, Belhaven University, and Downtown Jackson Partners.

Planning and Development Director Mukesh Kumar said, “We plan to move our city toward the model of Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS). ONELINE is the major step forward in that direction. With the backbone of robust public transit, we expect to respond to the mobility needs of all citizens regardless of their physical, economic, and age status.”

Come learn how this this new project will impact Belhaven, for the better of course!

Become a sponsor of Art for the Park 2019!

Plans are underway for Art for the Park, 2019! The Belhaven Garden Club and the Friends of Laurel Street Park invite you to join us in supporting this great cause. This year’s event will take place Thursday, April 25, 2019 at the Fairview Inn. The featured artist will be Belhaven’s own, Casey Creasey.

Friends, neighbors, and businesses came together in 2017 to raise over $20,000. Through this biannual fundraiser, thousands of families have continued to enjoy Laurel Street Park. Older equipment has been repaired and repainted, swings have been replaced, trees have been planted, and new benches have been built. An emergency call button and security cameras have been purchased with plans for installation. We couldn’t have done it without donors like you.

As Art for the Park 2019 approaches, we look forward to building on the success of previous fundraising efforts. In addition to regular park maintenance, funds raised this year will go towards constructing a paved walking path around the entire park. Miles will be walked, bikes of all sizes will scoot along the pavement, and children of all ages will have a safe and fun place to play. Additional playground equipment purchases and facility improvements are on the horizon as well.
