The Greater Belhaven Foundation Announces Ellen Langford As Bright Lights, Belhaven Nights Featured Artist

The Greater Belhaven Foundation (GBF) is pleased to announce that Ellen Langford is the featured artist of the 14th annual Bright Lights Belhaven Nights street festival (BLBN). Ellen, a Mississippi native, is pleased to call Belhaven home.

Ellen’s work will draw on inspiration from the festival with her painting during the event. The live painting is a new aspect of the BLBN artwork. Ellen will be set-up at her tent across from the BLBN tent where spectators can view her works while she paints.

“I build images with oil or acrylic of the physical and psychological spaces and connections between church and tree, child and dog, blue and orange,” said Langford.

“Whether commissioned, working from my heart in my studio, or painting on location, I am driven to communicate with layers of color and texture until each image becomes its own and I can move on. I try to paint a playful, and often joyful, outlook on life. After years away, studying and making art, it has been in returning to Mississippi that my work has found its rhythm and become highly narrative as I try to make sense of the race, class, religious, cultural, mixed up gumbo of this place.”

The painting will be included in the festival’s silent auction. Langford is a professional artist that has artwork displayed throughout Mississippi as well as New York, Maine and Alabama. She provides teaching workshops and demonstrations.

BLBN is scheduled for August 11, 2018, from 5:00 – 10:00 PM. Advance tickets are $10 per person and are available online at www.greaterbelhaven.com or $15 at the gate (cash only). Children ages 12 and under are free and must be with a supervising adult at all times.

Gates open at 5:00 p.m. Free parking will be available along Belhaven streets that have not been closed off, and in the parking garage adjacent to Baptist Health Systems Medical Arts East at the corner of North and Carlisle Streets. The entry gates will be located on Carilisle and Poplar Streets.

Bright Lights Belhaven Nights has repeatedly been named a Top 20 Event in the Southeast for the month of August by the Southeast Tourism Society. The historic Belhaven neighborhood also was designated as one of American Planning Association’s “Great Neighborhoods in America 2014.”

The Greater Belhaven Neighborhood Foundation Receives Mississippi Arts Commission Grant

(Jackson, Miss) — The Greater Belhaven Neighborhood Foundation of Jackson, MS has been awarded a $2,100.00 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). This grant is a portion of the nearly $1.4 million in grants the Commission will award in 2018-2019 and will be used to expand the Being Belhaven Art Series in 2019. The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

“The Mississippi Arts Commission supports arts activities in nearly every corner of the state through grants to arts organizations, schools, communities and units of government,” said Malcolm White, executive director of MAC. “The projects and programming these organizations produce with MAC funds helps enrich our state’s communities. This funding helps organizations provide arts experiences and educational opportunities to people who may not otherwise have access to the arts.”

Greater Belhaven Foundation, a non-profit group governed by a board of directors, works to improve and revitalize the area through long-range planning, economic restructuring, historic preservation, green space enhancement, and quality of life. The Being Belhaven Arts Series began in 2010 and was conceptualized as a way to bring neighbors together with other Jackson communities to experience the arts in an outdoor greenspace setting.
